These 16 old home remedies relieve toothache

Toothache is uncomfortable. Depending on their strength, they can be really bad for the person affected. Normally you should go to a doctor for a toothache, but sometimes this is simply not possible, or you want to help yourself first. Home remedies have helped in many cases, and of course it always matters what causes the pain.

For some problems, only the dentist can help, but it is certainly worth a try. Sometimes something has to be experimented, because not all means are equally effective. It can be very different from person to person.

Tip: Since toothache is often caused by bacteria, it is important not to work with too-hot home remedies. The heat does the bacteria good, they can proliferate so well and the problem gets worse rather than getting better. In contrast, cold is usually not only pleasant, but actually relieves the pain.

Home remedies for toothache

1. pulling oil

Preventative for healthy teeth and gums, as well as for acute pain, oil pulling is a good thing. High-quality, cold-pressed sunflower oil is used. Take a small mouthful and leave it for about 10 minutes. During the time the oil will move back and forth like the water when brushing your teeth. Do not swallow the oil !!! It is finally disposed of in a tissue. When spitting into the sink must be cleaned afterwards and the oil can clog the drain with frequent use. Sunflower oil has an antibacterial and antiviral effect, which is why it is also recommended as a preventive measure for the oral cavity. The best is the oil pulling in the morning, first, before brushing your teeth. In case of pain you can repeat it several times a day.

2. Mouthwash

With mouthwash much can be done for toothache. Especially good are those that contain clove oil. Just hold the mouthwash in your mouth for a few minutes and move it back and forth and then spit it out. From my own experience, I can highly recommend the variety "Just a drop" or "One drop only", as it is usually called today. It contains peppermint, clove, thyme, sage and tea tree oil and helps very well with inflammation and associated pain.

3. saline solution

Since salt is present in every household, the salt solution is quick to produce. Half a teaspoon of salt is dissolved in a glass of lukewarm water. Ideal is sea salt or another good salt. Take a sip of it about 2 minutes in the mouth and move back and forth. Do not swallow it !!! The salt is supposed to help against pain.

Ingestion may cause nausea and vomiting, especially in children. Salt is often used to induce vomiting.

4. hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide helps with inflammation, infections. Because it is versatile, it can be found in many households, otherwise it can be bought in the pharmacy. Just put 15 ml of a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution in your mouth and leave for 10 minutes. Spit. After treatment, rinse mouth several times with water. Repeat the treatment up to 3 times a day.

5. clove or clove oil

Clove oil has an antibacterial effect. It is dabbed directly on the aching tooth and acts simultaneously numbing and pain-relieving. Although the oil can burn a bit in the beginning, but that decreases quickly and the remedy is really helpful. Equally useful is a hard clove. Just take them in your mouth and chew something on it. The taste takes some getting used to, but there are worse ones. When the carnation softens and opens, the helpful clove oil is released. It is best to leave them on the affected tooth for about 30 minutes. However, there are also reports that the direct application of a carnation aggravates the pain, at least when a hole in the tooth is the cause of the pain.

Just put ice cubes in a small freezer bag or in a small bag. Close these tightly. Then wrap a kitchen towel or something similar around it and press the ice pack from the outside against the painful area. If it is the right place, the nerves are calmed after about 15 minutes. Sometimes it helps to suck an ice cube.

7. Onion

Onions counteract inflammation. You can do different things. On the one hand, an onion can be chopped up and wrapped in a cloth. This is pressed from the outside against the painful area. 15 minutes should help. In addition, one can take an onion slice directly into the mouth and press it against the painful area. That's certainly more intense than from the outside, but probably not everyone's thing. Onions can be very spicy.

8. Toothpaste

If the tooth necks are particularly painful, it may help to put flouride toothpaste on the spot. Usually not a hole is guilty, but the exposure of the Dentinkanäle. This is especially noticeable in hot or cold influences. Toothpaste acts like a protective layer. If you have to fight with sensitive teeth, you should get a special toothpaste, eg Elmex Sensitiv Professional, which helps, I can say that from my own experience.

9. Peppermint tea

Gargling or rinsing with peppermint tea can also help with toothache. The tea can be swallowed afterwards, but it is better to spit it out. It is ideal to use fresh or even dried peppermint and no tea bags that are not as good in effect for a long time.

Myrrh helps with inflammation, especially the oral mucosa and toothache in general. You can use a myrrh tincture or a waxy myrrh paste. Myrrh is a resin that comes from special trees. This can not only reduce inflammation, but also kills bacteria. For the tincture, heat 5 ml (1 tsp) of myrrh powder and 500 ml of water in a pot and simmer for about 30 minutes. Strain the liquid and allow to cool. To use again mix 5 ml of this liquid with 125 ml of water and rinse with the mouth, preferably several times a day, at least five to six times.

For the myrrh paste, finely grind a 2.5 cm piece of myrrh wax and mix with a quarter teaspoon (1.25 ml) of vinegar. It must form a paste. If necessary, use more paste or vinegar. Apply directly on the painful area and let it work. Then rinse with warm water again.

There are also help points on the upper lip, earlobe and skullcap. For more useful information see acupressure points list.

There are also acupuncture points for toothache, but you should not just pin a needle somewhere, not to mention that special needles are needed for it.

15. Propolis

Propolis tincture helps with many ailments. The tincture propolis is used in alcohol. The tinctures are differently concentrated. The best is one with 96 percent alcohol, as it contains all the propolis resin. Less high percentage alcohols do not manage to completely dissolve the resin. For toothache, rinse and gargle with diluted propolis tincture or apply the tincture directly to the painful area.

16. cinnamon oil

Cinnamon oil has been used by our grandparents for toothache. It must be given undiluted to the pain tooth. Since the oil is used neat, the treatment must not be repeated too often.

Conclusion

Anyone who has ever had a toothache knows how uncomfortable that is. For some causes, all sorts of things can be done to make the pain more bearable. In any case, a dentist should be consulted immediately, clarifying the cause. If the pain comes from a dental treatment, it is important to follow the instructions of the dentist. Home remedies have lost nothing with open wounds in the mouth.

Otherwise, of course, "a lot does not help much". The amounts used for the tinctures and other treatments should not exceed homeopathic doses.
